I want to tell you about a DIY Carpet Cleaner that requires only 3 ingredients and $3 to make!!
It is amazing and can be used to spot clean stains or use in a carpet cleaning machine!!!
Just take a look at the before and after pics below.
Pretty amazing huh???
Cleaning is one of my least favorite chores. It’s at the very bottom of the list of things I enjoy doing.
If you’re a mom like me, cleaning can take up ALOT of your time.
There’s no other way to put it.
This is a picture of my daughter’s room.
It’s a shit hole.
Lucky for me, I can just close the door and forget about it.
I do it all the time.
It is super frustrating, but I don’t want to waste MY time on HER mess. The problem has made me cry many, many, many times before, and I wrote a blog post about it called How I Maintain My Sanity While Living With a Slob.
Anyway…back to my DIY Carpet Cleaner.
I have been cleaning shit out of my carpet for years and years and years. It usually starts with me walking into a room to find a pile of dog shit, dog piss, or maybe even some slime. After the initial discovery, I usually cry and ask myself “WTF??? Why does this keep happening to me???”
After my meltdown, I make the magic work.
I’ve got the entire process down to a science.
I use a Hoover FH50150 Carpet Basics Power Scrub Deluxe Carpet Cleaner like the one in the picture below.
This is the actual carpet cleaner I own. It’s amazing and cost less than $200 ($160.13 to be exact)!!
You’ll get your money’s worth out of it in no time.
Professional carpet cleaning in my area costs about $99 for 5 rooms. So…if you clean 5 rooms twice, you’ve already got your money’s worth.
Ok, so…moving on.
Below is a picture of dog shit/diarrhea all over my “nice” living room.
I just walked past the room and “BOOM” it glared at me. There was no door to shut.
No way for me to pretend this nightmare of a mess doesn’t exist.
Ugh…….time to get to work!!
There’s no rocket science to it and I don’t measure the products out.
I just “wing” it.
I fill the solution compartment with a mixture of white vinegar, dish soap, and ammonia. You can purchase all three for $1 each at the dollar store.
I fill about 90% of the compartment with vinegar, 10% ammonia and a good two or three big squirts of dish washing soap.
You can use only vinegar and dish soap if that’s all you have on hand, but I think the ammonia gives it a little extra “kick”.
The secret to getting the biggest bang out of your cleaner is to use VERY, VERY, VERY, HOT water.
Make sure you “spot test” a small area before you get started!!!
Ok…So let’s take one more look.
Here’s the before:
Here’s the after:
I have used this mixture to spot clean smaller stains out of the carpet without the carpet cleaner. I have found that what works best for spot cleaning without a carpet cleaner is to put the solution in a spray bottle, wet the stain with very hot water and spray the stain with the solution. You can let it soak for a bit or try to rub it in a bit.
When I spot clean, I also like to sprinkle borax on the stain. (Don’t ever add borax to your carpet cleaner!!!! Trust me…I did it and it was a nightmare.)Borax is gritty and will really add some power to your spot cleaning solution. After I have given the carpet a good scrub, I pour more hot water on it and blot it dry with a towel. You may have to do this several times. After I have removed as much water as I can, I sprinkle baking soda on it and let it dry.
Baking soda is amazing at pulling liquids out. Let it soak overnight and then sweep it up with a broom and dustpan. After you have swept up any big pieces, vacuum the remaining mess.
I really want to hear what you think!!! Do you have any great DIY cleaning tips???
